Ill Manors- Social Network

Social Media has made promoting movies easier, history has also confirmed it as for example, Final Destination and Paranormal Activities was proved their popularity on both social sites Twitter and YouTube.  This shows that social media is useful and advantageous as audiences are able to look up on the latest news on their social sites. This is the official twitter page of Ill Manors what I think is effective is they are able to promote their movie globally also more than 4,000 people are following the page which shows the source of engagement and level of communication between the audience and the film. This is very useful and advantageous as diverse people can recognise with the film and are able to discover more about it, tweet to them, and watch the latest for example, behind the scenes videos, able to view the websites on the (biography) and continuously kept up-to-date with valid information. Being able to watch the ill manors music videos and songs too with the recommended link when it 'tweets'. Also, as most people will be connected to twitter as well as Facebook will be able to notice this and come across it therefore this is a very useful way in promoting it to the audience as they will be able to watch repeat DVD's as for example on the bio it says, "OUT NOW Blue-Ray, DVD, Download & On-demand" so from this there are various of ways which is suited for the customers if they want to view it also recommending a website to gets them involved and instantly to get audience's watching.

Sound

This a song written by Lana Del Rey, what I've done is chose the instrumental version as I believe it makes more sense and would suit more towards our title sequence. This is called summertime sadness and what I really like about the instruments are it's nice, slow and calm connoting emotions and a type of love story to the audience. They will therefore be able to identify a glimpse of the type of genre our 2-Minute opening will be as most teenagers judge the sound of the title-sequence to make an assumption of the series in a whole. We as a group could use this not so much for a title-sequence but when we introduce the screen names (texts) on the screen when it starts to appear we could start to have this instrumental for her. As it would suit with the scene of the girl looking at the world from a different perspective.

This superb music is by Ellie Goulding- Anything Could Happen I think the starting and chorus elements are quite interesting as they start becoming upbeat, also it could like closely with the narrative as it says 'anything could happen' which allows the psychographics of the audience to be interested as they are struggler's and are able to identify the fact that literally anything could possible happen. This could possibly be conveying a message to the audience for the particular scene when she is travelling because they're won't be as much lyrics.

This is a song by Ellie Goulding called Don't say A Word. What I think is most interesting is to the point 0.44 seconds into it as the upbeat and lyrics start and this is very engaging towards the different as the lyrics have significant meanings which are in accordance to the storyline. I feel we should add this to the title-sequence as from 44 seconds into the song till about 5 seconds it will suit it a lot because we can have 'E4 entertain presents' while this appears smoothly this song can slowly start to begin which would look professional and attain the audiences attention effectively.

I feel this instrumental in the beginning is beautiful and would look very good at the beginning because, the girl is going to be going down a flight of stairs then travelling and when this happens we can connote the sadness, pain and make the audience feel empathetic for her. This will also help them engage more effectively. And when having different shots of the girl while playing this song would fit in perfectly as audience will therefore feel the same kind of emotions as her allowing them to be in her point of view, this is useful anyway as she is the protagonist. And the audience will be assuming things like what had happened in her past life and trying to plot the story on how it is. This is useful as that's how we want to show cast our clip and get the audience feeling this way.

Ill Manors Collage

I have selected images that have influenced Plan B's life and summarazing it in a short form. For example, on the right hand side their is 'inspirational people' who have inspired him vastly. On the left hand side the singer was the one who came up with the ill manors song but Plan B changed it into a modern outlook to interest the audiences and allow them to feel more so engaged. Underneath, I showed his diverse streams of talents for example, He's holding a camera showing he's a director and then the album underneath. And a glimpse of a picture of him and Leona Lewis when they went Hackney how they got involved with the communities inspiring them. And then I've added an estate to show where he's come from but where he is now, adding 'successful' it shows his music career inspirations he's speaking up for this generation and then the awards he's gained from his hard work. The slogan I came up with was 'Who needs actions when you got words' this is effective as his songs are very heart warming and for instance it touched his inspirations heart 'Rojjer' and he was crying. So he speaks speaking about his values and belefis through his music which I believe is a very strong point and the slogan wraps how he does it overall.

Progress report

14/01/13-  Me and Rashmi have met up and are now going to be doing our official scripts. Previosuly we had done a rough copy and discussed it with the group to get there feedback and ensure that everyone is happy with it. And they are so taking in everyones feedback me and rashmi are going to go ahead with the script as soon as possible because after the storyboard can start too. And having this done is a vital element as if we do our planning the script and storyboard when we are filming, we can consistently check the scropts and storyboards to make sure we are going in the right direction. Also it will keep us focused and if we forget things it will remind us on areas, also it could give us time to improve some elements too.

Action Plan: Continue with further research and analyse from inspirations from for example, e4 teen prgrammes before the water-shed.
Research the actors we can possibly have by going to the drama group as we want our clip to be professional.
After script is done start on the storyboard straight away.
Email the ealing council to ask for permission in various of locaations.
Research different sound which can be suitable for A step back and aslo elements of sound during the clip.
Research on the title sequence look at different aspects in teen dramas which could inspire us on the clip.

Ill Manors: Website

The website is a great idea as it's drawing the audience in, in several of ways with the way it's layout for example it's diverse from the rest. It's also a cost effectively way to promote the website which is effective. Ill Manors website comes up with a print advert of Ill Manors as the background, it contains some of the protagonists from the movie. There is an urban background behind the characters which consists of housing estates, graffiti on the walls, the rough furniture. This evidently shows the audience the type of setting Ill manors is going to be like. In here there consists of Low-key lighting, this represents the film being emotional and have serious elements. Mise en scene clearly foreshadows to the audience that the area is full of lower class people as it looks unwealthy from the surroundings. There consists of a long shoot, to show the body language of each of the characters and thins can inform the audience on the type of characters they are playing by the way they look. The layout of the website in a whole looks very unique and attainable, as it has features where you can find vital information about Ill Manors on the left such as, trailer, synopsis, director/information, links, albums etc and at the bottom it consist of the institutions of the film.

Ill Manors Trailer Analysis

a) What are the typical codes and conventions of film trailers - what information is usually provided?

The film trailer is consisted of the director's name, the release dates, taglines, companies who have funded and distributed the films, and people's comments which are the reviews, it also involves the film's title (Ill Manors), the main protagonists, their is a voice over 'having a rap' which shows us the movie/trailer in a different perspective. By having 'Plan B's' rap throughout makes it more engaging and the audience can understand the story line is a short form of summary. There consists of enigma codes which leave the audience tempted to find out what happens in the Ill Manors. These are all vital elements as it aids in telling the audience what the film is about, and providing these vital codes and conventions backs up the idea to the audience effectively.

b) How are trailers distributed?

Trailers are distributed by the same studios that produced them for an example, Warner Bros distributes Harry Potter films but also it's trailers.

c) How does Ill Manors use trailer conventions?

Firstly, the typography of Ill Manors is in bold and instantly visual which connotes the genre of the film. For example, if it was in small font and italics it would show peace and a love genre but as this is big and bold it suits a 'crime' genre. The title of the film is shown and it's significant as it makes the audience well aware of the film and it's title allowing them to be hooked up in a sense. Valid information such as release date is shown at the end of the trailer this informs the audience of when the film will be releasing out in cinemas allowing them to know in advance and keeping them excited. The reviewers quotes are summarized on the screen which is effective in promoting the film to the audience as it get's them wondering if it's useful going there to see it or not. And in the Ill Manors reviewers quotes it clearly is positive as for example, Simone Baird, Time Out says 'A film for our times' this is making it clear for the audience that as the generation has changed some may have not realised how diverse teenagers are acting. So watching this film points out to the audience that they'll be keeping up-do-date with the society. Dan Rookwood, Mens health says its 'Brilliant Brutal Powerful' this also keeps a positive recommendation for the audience and would want them want to see the movie.

There is non-diegetic sound used consistently through out the trailer of a voice over from Plan B. This connotes that he is the narrater of the film which is showing something unique and inspirational. The type of editing which is used is montage editing which represents it's a non-linear narrative towards the types of shots and very face pace meanings. This goes in line with the type of music used in the trailer it's urban which would attain young audiences attention, as the sound track is in the film which again would get there attention.

Moreover, In the rap when he says 'I am the narrator' we can see the glimpse of Plan B driving the car which makes it more engaging and interesting. The directors/producer's name is stated in the middle 'From Visionary artist Plan B' this shows how he has produced the film and it makes people know who he is and that he's imaginative clearly showing from the trailer itself. Also if people already know who he is that would allow them to engage more so, as he's making a film in line with his raps because he has strong beliefs and values.

d) Who is the target audience?

I believe this is targeted at young adults from 18-34, as the film consists of a stream of violence, stealing, drug taking and alcohol. Also it being an 18 you would be able to identify that it's going to include these elements. The psychographic group which could relate to this or may be intrigued are stugglers  and reformers. As they want to seek escape and are 'depressed' seeking no way out in there 'miserable' life. Or going through a lot of pain because of a bad past.

Questions E-J summarized in a paragraph.

Yes, for example it uses the Plan's B rap to summarize the story in a whole and shows the vital elements which signify the narrative effectively.  The montage editing reveals to the audience that Ill Manors has multi-strand narrative so it won't be focusing on just one main narrative but it will be very complex. Flashbacks are show cased in the trailer, which connotes that in some shots of the film the flashbacks are vital in reflecting on each of the characters. Which allows the audience to be engaged more so. There is a lot of information of the director as "From the visonary artist Plan B" which is vital in show casting to the audience that he directed and produced it. Also there being a voice over is vital from Plan B. There is vital information like the release date and the title of the film shown at the end of the trailer. This is effective because it keeps the audience aware. The main stars are not visible in the tailer which could connote that they're not well known enough therefore it may not be that vital as audiences wouldn't know who they are. And having Plan B is more engaging and effective as it could allow the audience to watch it because he's very well known.

k) How has the genre of the film been represented through characters, settings, lighting, colour, music, camera shots/movements/angles and editing?

The genre of the film is teen urban drama as through visually seeing the body language of the protagonists there actions, lifestyle and costumes for example, 'hoodies'. The males in the trailer are wearing joggers and hoodies which represent them stereotypically for young adults being criminals. The music is closely related to the genre as it's mostly listened to by a large amount of teenagers which would allow them to engage more. Habving non-digetic sound is used of plan B, this shows clearly to the audience he is the narrative of Ill Manors. And this is shown clearly through his lyrics "I am the narrator let me take you back and fourth" while this is rapped he is shown driving through the mirror which makes it more so engaging. There are diverse settings during the trailers such as police station, an alley, housing-estate. As for diverse settings there consists of different characters which may suggest that Ill Mnaors follows a complicated storyline which is vital to the audience as they can expect to be confused. The lighting is key lighting and some aspects of low-key lighting this is during diverse shots which make it more so engaging.  The camera shots are very effective as they show diverse angles, for example it represents the outlook of diverse stories. As, when for example someone has a gun up an actors neck there is a use of close-up which makes it more effective as the audience are able to identify the facial expressions and feel frightened too making them more engaged to the narrative.
